Primarily handed down through generation of father and sons, the stories of the unique endeavor of the Kadazan people have been kept alive by way of Oral Tradition. Although alive, this priceless tales of old are primarily memorized and not written down. This in a sense is making it harder and harder to sustain a proper number among the Kadazanian who are willing to master and memorize this art. It is sad to know that most of the true account of the Kadazan's origin and historical background are mostly lost in the unwritten past, even today the origin of the name Kadazan is still debated of its original meaning.

With many rich tales of heroes, monsters, spirits, and gods- one can't help but to fall in love or be intrigue with the exciting tales that the Kadazaninan people have to offer. For them, stories of old are told occasionally by the elders to younger generation to either entertain or to inspire the spirit of life inside them. Below are some of the tales of legend that are quite famous among my Kadazanian friends.

1. The legend of Monsopiad
  • In this story of vengeance and corruption, "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" - Two face from The Dark Knight - as the hero Monsopiad who was born in a village called Kuai bestowed within him special powers by the Bujang birds, was actually slain by the people he swore to protect . Although seen at first to be the savior of his people, power got the best of him as when all of the enemies of the village had been chased down and decapitated by Monsopiad- his lust to battle grew ever so larger. When there were no people else to be his enemy, he then seek to duel his own people to satisfy his lust of head hunting as for you see, Monsopiad craved the trophies of people's head. When the villagers saw this, they grew ever so scared of Monsopiad and one day they decided to slay him within his own home while he was resting. As they attack him, he fought back fiercely but realized that he had lost his special powers that were bestowed upon him by the Bugang bird. By abusing his gift, he was left powerless and it was that very night that Monsopiad's life ended. All in all he collected 42 heads as trophies and although the villagers killed him, he was still loved and seen as the savior of the village.
